REFRAIN: Old Tom cat, the Bosun’s pet, he went to sea, but never got wet
With the wind in his whiskers and crabs in his coat, he was never happier than when afloat.

Also on the log was an Old Sea Dog, who they say had died of sorrow,
For, on dry land, cat’s prints in the sand, a larger set would follow.

REFRAIN: Old Tom cat, the Bosun’s pet, he went to sea, but never got wet
With the wind in his whiskers and crabs in his coat, he was never happier than when afloat.

He sailed so long on the Indian route he wouldn’t touch food raw, baked or stewed
The Bosun’s mate said “Don’t be worried, he’ll only eat it when it’s curried.”

REFRAIN: Old Tom cat, the Bosun’s pet, he went to sea, but never got wet
With the wind in his whiskers and crabs in his coat, he was never happier than when afloat.

They sailed away for a year and a day, till they beached at Jeffrey’s Bay
No pirate’s hoard, just an old surf board, but they couldn’t drag him away,
away, they couldn’t drag him away
